Cluster Showroom Manager

What is your job role?

? I run our Stamford showroom as well as oversee Oakham and Whittlesey. This means that I manage our showroom staff and handle all enquiries, working with customers to design their dream kitchens and bathrooms, visiting their property for measurements and managing their project from design to completion.

What’s it like to work for Buildbase?

Buildbase has installed really good knowledge and invested in staff, so we can service our customers effectively. We look after our own, it’s very team orientated and if you have a problem you can go to somebody and they will help. Once you’re established here then you are trusted to know what you’re doing without anyone looking over your shoulder.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I love my job. I don’t ever have a day when I think ‘I don’t want to go in today’ and we are all the same. The role is really varied as customers all have different ideas about their project and design. No two days are the same.

How did you get into the industry?

A job came up as a trainee showroom assistant for Buildbase 21 years ago. I like people and talking, and so getting to understand people’s needs combined with the design element really appealed. I hoped to see a project through end-to-end and have pride in my work. I went from trainee to designer to showroom manager, which was so successful that I was asked to look after two more showrooms. I’m fortunate that 99% of customers invite me back to see what we have achieved.

What advice would you give to other
women wanting to work in the industry?

Go for it! Don’t feel that it’s stigmatised. Times have changed and it’s not a man’s world any more. No one comes out of education wanting to be a designer for a merchant. People want to work for independents, but we have some fantastic materials and do some really lovely designs. More women should get involved in our industry, it’s a real shame that they don’t.
