Head of Health & Safety

What is your job role?

I set the health and safety strategy for the business and work with three regional health and safety advisors to implement this into the branches as well as complete training, audits and accident investigations. A lot of my role involves working with various people in the business to identify areas where we can become safer and find practical solutions to implement in the business. I also lead a team of volunteers to expand our environmental initiatives.

What’s it like to work for Buildbase?

I started out as a health and safety advisor and gradually progressed through the business to my current role. People don’t treat me differently because I’m a woman. Everyone is really supportive, open and friendly. I believe that I have progressed because I’m not afraid of volunteering and putting myself forward. Like every business there is a hierarchy, but here you can pick up the phone to anyone, from director to driver, and they will all be happy to talk to you.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I’m a real people person, so I enjoy the fact that I get to work with lots of different people throughout the business on a daily basis. I also love the variety of my role and that one day I can be looking at how we can make a branch safer with a yard supervisor and the next be at a board meeting talking about next year’s strategy. It’s also rewarding to see progress and how appreciative people are of our support.

How did you get into the industry?

I have worked in health and safety for 14 years. I was working in Australia for Dominos when the job came up as a health and safety advisor focusing on strategy across Grafton as well as working with some of its smaller brands. While I didn’t know anything about merchanting, I wanted to remain in a retail environment and work for a fast-paced business and this seemed to fit the bill. I have now worked here for five years and been promoted three times.

What advice would you give to other
women wanting to work in the industry?

If you want something you have to put yourself forward and ask, otherwise people may not know that you want to progress and get involved. If you’re prepared to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in then people won’t treat you differently. Be yourself. Do your job to the best that you can and people will respect you.
