Branch Manager at Buckingham

What is your job role?

I’m involved in all areas of the branch from managing customers and suppliers to stock taking and running the shop and yard. It means that I get to speak to lots of people across the business to access central functions such as marketing and credit control.

What’s it like to work for Buildbase?

I previously worked at a different merchant and have found that Buildbase a lot more open and friendly. The senior team is really approachable, it’s a great atmosphere and you get a lot of support and guidance to reach your full potential. I started here around a year and a half ago and have already been promoted from assistant branch manager to manager.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I like the different challenges that we face every day, that no two days are the same and the people management side. I love talking to different people, and I get to do this every day. The conversations that I have with staff, suppliers and customers are never the same.

How did you get into the industry?

I came into it fresh out of college. My stepdad worked at a merchant and helped me to get work experience. I spent a week handing out canapés at a conference, but I really loved it. I pestered the area director to give me a job and he did! I worked my way up from serving behind the counter. I did a trainee scheme, which led me to an assistant branch manager role.

What advice would you give to other
women wanting to work in the industry?

Be brave and stand up for yourself. This is a male dominated environment and people will presume your job role without knowing you. Sometimes you will need a thick skin, but whether you’re a man or a woman you have been chosen because you are good enough. I think a lot of women just fall into the industry, use it as a stopgap or don’t come into it because of self-doubt. I would like to see more women actively encouraged to join. Branch level is a great place to start, as there is a clear progression path.
